The modern rules of advertising?

So how far have we come in modern advertising? Have we grown up or are we still utilizing bad stereotypes & sexism, not to mentions sexy imagery to sell product?

well as you have guessed it... Yeah of course all we see in modern advertising is sexy models selling us motor oil... Seems logical enough... Hot girl = motor oil....

John Camm has compiled a list of the top things that irritate him in modern advertising.... Brilliant...

Make Poverty History

Every single day, 30,000 children die, needlessly, of extreme poverty.

On July 6th, we finally have the opportunity to stop that shameful statistic.

8 world leaders, gathered in Scotland for the G8 summit, will be presented with a workable plan to double aid, drop the debt and made the trade laws fair. If these 8 men agree, then we will become the generation that made poverty history.

But they'll only do it if enough people tell them to.

Apple/Intel Debate... Just Get OVER IT!

OK... I just want to preface what i'm about to say with this...

I am a huge Mac supporter... I have been for close to twenty years.. I have owned several Apple machines (my first real graphic powerhouse being an LC back in 1990). So DON'T freak out on me when I say the following.

Apples annonced switch to Intel Processors is NOT the ned of the world!

C'mon it's just a chip. OK yes it traditionally has been the driver for the evil empires OS. But that 's not the chips fault.

Do y'all think that since there is now to be an Intel chip in your Mac that means you are closer to a Winblows system?

Well of course not... It's still gonna be running OS X!

And do you think Apple will make OS X compatible to the crap hardware thats out there riunning Winblows?

Think about it! Why the hell would they do that.... do you think Steve is that friggin dumb?

What does Apple do? They make hardware! And they make an OS that runs on that hardware!

How much does Apple make on the OS? Like $100 a pop... And how much on the hardware to run the OS? $2000 - 4000 a pop! Even if you upgrade the OS a few times with each HArdware purchase.. the hardware is still earning 5-8 times the retail dollar than the OS. I dunno what kinf of margins Apple build into their hardware sales, but I've got to assume that there is still more money in the hardware portion of their business.

So why the hell would they build the OS to run on the other guys hardware?

Some may argue that that would allow them to get the OS on way more machines... Well did you think of the cost of that?

A little info on software development... Whenyou make software you test it on the hardware its gonna run on... so right now Apple only tests on the machines that they make - cuz thats all it sorks on. So lets see... Desktop towers - 4-5 standard machine types.... iMacs - theres another 4-5 standard machines... Laptops... OK iBooks - another 4-5 machines a,d finally Powerbooks - another 4-5 machines.... So what do we have.... About 20 different systems.. add a few other variations/generations of machines to the mix and look we still have under 50 basic machines to test on....

Now lets think of those guys in Redmond.... they build an OS for anybody that can put to gether a syetem from the spare parts bin at Radio Shack. And the bloody OS is expected to work. Yes they have a logo program for hardware vendors to get Windows Certified... but how many systems do you think they have to test their OS on before they can ship it out.... I'm betting its gotta be hundreds (conservative estimate im guessing)....

Why do you think Longhorn keeps getting delayed...

So why would Apple wanna put themselves into this position....

Right now they build a wicked good OS on hardware that they control...

As long as Apple keeps building the coolest hardware and software, who the hell cares what the chip is that drives the damn thing.

IBM/Motorola couldn't deliver the speed! - End of story!

IF you wanna flame... debate... call me funny names... go ahead... gimme your best shot!

Clarke's three laws

Science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke formulated the following three laws:

1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.

2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.

3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Quote of the moment

"I don’t know what percentage of our time on any computer based project is spent getting the equipment to work right, but if I had a gardener who spent as much of the time fixing her shovel as we spend fooling with our computers, I’d buy her a good shovel. At least you can buy a good shovel."

What design really means...

So our friends over at Viceland, purveyors of VICE magazine's latest issue on Design.

So what are we to expect from their sarcastic quill? Well here is a taste of their Design Definitions from the A to Z of Design:

G: GERMANS
Not only do the Krauts talk cool and run a lot, but having to attend a mandatory six years in der Clan Crest school means they are ALL good at design. If you need a catchy symbol for your flag, these guys have got it down.

So have a look and see what's what... and for many of you I am sure you will agree with more than a few of these points no matter how much you want to deny it.

Here is a link to the full article... Viceland A to Z of Design, hope you enjoy it.
